State of Florida - Dangerous Dogs

Oh dear god I just read this article about Miami Beach trying to change the State of Florida's  definition of “dangerous dogs” to make it easier for people to adopt canines that have been involved in dog-fighting.  It is HB 4075.  They are basing their "expert" opinion on the case of Michael Vick,  the football quarterback who served almost two years in prison after pleading guilty to federal dog-fighting charges.  The article goes on to say that "Of the 51 Vick pit bulls seized at the Bad Newz Kennels in Virginia, only one had to be put down for being too violent. The rest were sent to dog shelters, and in some cases rehabilitated enough be taken in by families."

Ummm...okay..  only THREE of the 22 Vick dogs have been adopted out after over three years.

Read that sentence again. That is three years too long that they could be accepting new (and very adoptable) dogs into their program.  The only thing this proposed bill will do is fill up Florida's shelters with dogs that will take years to supposedly rehab - all the while numerous and very adoptable dogs will be turned away as there will be no room, which is already happening.  So when the shelter fills up with these un-adoptable dogs - what is going to happen to Florida's good pets that might be displaced due to unforeseen circumstances?

Having said that - who will be taking on the liability that comes with this?  It states in the article that the bill would make adoptive owners liable for any "problems" with the dog.  Seriously, who will be liable if  it mauls or kills their new owner, their new owner's child, the neighbors' child, etc.  Will the adoptive owners have to purchase a special liability insurance policy???  What insurance policy can pay you enough to compensate you for the loss of your child or loved one?

People are getting too caught up in this "no-kill/rescue" thing and are starting to lose their rationale.  Please stop and think about this.

FLORIDA RESIDENTS PLEASE TAKE NOTICE OF THIS AND CONTACT:

Kudos Mr. Carr for delving into the reality that  "....pit bulls are controversial for a reason...."  I look forward to your continued coverage of pit bull type dogs and the many issues that surround them.
